Science and Scientific Research has always been at the forefront of life in Ireland, from famous scientists such as Robert Boyle, Francis Beaufort and Lord Kelvin historically to the global center for research and excellence it has now become. 16 of the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical companies have manufacturing operations in Ireland and nearly half of the world’s top selling drugs are produced in Ireland including Lipitor, Viagra and Zocor. In 2006, 47% of total merchandise exports from Ireland were from the pharmachem sector making it, by far, the most important industry on the island.
Science Recruitment in Irish pharmaceutical and chemical industry in the last 10 years has increased by over 56%. The industry employs over 24,000 people within over half of them 3rd level graduates. The number of people entering the workforce in scientific and technical disciplines is expected to rise strongly over the next five years against a backdrop of decline in manufacturing and agriculture industries. Ireland is set to become one of the most highly skilled and dynamic workforces in the global market, which it will need to stave off the expected competition from emerging markets such a India and China.
